A sea theme belongs in a bathroom. Keep the paper clear of the shower and direct splashes. The wall behind the bath or the sink is fine.

Take the softest option here. Pale scales or a quiet wave pattern will still suit the room in five years, which a cartoon will not.

Colors to Build Around

Sea green, teal and soft aqua are the core. Blush pink and lilac warm them up. Pearl, cream and sand keep it calm. Gold accents suit the scales without going glitzy. Keep the rest of the room plain. One bold wall plus plain bedding is the rule. Painting the other walls in a shade pulled from the mural is the easiest way to tie it all together.

Making It Last

Kids' taste moves fast. A few tricks help. Pick a design with no branded characters. Pull the color scheme from the mural rather than the theme, so bedding can change without a clash. Getting a Child Involved
