What Chevron Wallpaper Is

Chevron wallpaper is a wall covering made of repeating V shapes in rows. The points meet cleanly, which is what sets it apart from herringbone. It reads bold, ordered and a little retro.

Chevron or Herringbone?

People mix these up constantly, so it is worth a moment. In chevron, the two arms of the V meet at a clean point. In herringbone, they step past each other like a parquet floor. Chevron is the sharper, more graphic of the two. Herringbone is quieter and reads more like texture.

Scale and Direction Do the Work

A chevron is a strong directional pattern. Use that on purpose.

Run the points upward and the wall feels taller. That is a real help in a room with a low ceiling. Run them sideways and a narrow room feels wider. A wide zigzag reads bold and needs a clear wall. Nothing in front of it, nothing cutting across. A narrow one reads as texture and works almost anywhere, including a wall broken up by doors and windows.

The same zigzag can go three ways. Black on white is graphic and modern. Cream on sage, clay or dusty blue is soft and current. Gold on navy or emerald is full art deco. Living With a Strong Pattern

Be honest about how much energy you want. A high-contrast chevron is loud. It suits a hall, a nursery or a feature wall, not a room where you plan to relax for hours. Drop the contrast and it calms right down. Cream on off-white barely registers as a pattern, and it still gives a plain room some life.

Keep the rest of the room simple. One chevron wall plus a patterned rug is too much. Solid textiles and plain furniture let it breathe.
