The finish changes the room more than the subject does. There are three routes and they behave very differently.

A fine line sketch reads light and almost like art on paper. It suits a modern room and never dominates. A faded fresco look brings warm ochre and soft edges, which is the most forgiving option in a period home. A full photographic view is the boldest. It is closest to standing there, but it needs a clear wall and simple furniture around it. Pick the finish first and the subject second.

In an entry hall it sets the tone for the whole house. In a study, columns behind the desk frame the room and read well on a call. The Colors of Rome

The palette is warm and easy to build around. Ochre, terracotta, sand, umber, cream and soft gray stone. There is almost no cold color in it.

That warmth is useful. It lifts a north-facing room that gets little sun. It also means the wall pairs simply with wood, leather, linen and brass. Keep the metal warm, since chrome sits badly against old stone. If your room is already warm and bright, look for a paler gray marble version instead. It gives you the same subject with a cooler, calmer feel.

Keeping It From Feeling Heavy

This is the honest risk with a grand mural. Done badly it can feel like a hotel lobby. The fix is restraint everywhere else.

One wall only. Plain paint on the other three. Simple modern furniture rather than reproduction pieces. No second pattern in the room, and a plain floor if you can manage it.
