How Long Does Self Adhesive Wallpaper Last?

Expect five to ten years from self adhesive wallpaper on a clean, dry, well prepped wall. Bedrooms and hallways sit at the top of that range. Steamy bathrooms and busy kitchens sit at the bottom. Edges lift before the middle does.

Wipe it monthly with a damp cloth, wrung out well. Skip abrasive sprays and scouring pads, which dull the print. Marks from hands and furniture come off with plain water.

Which Walls Does Self Adhesive Wallpaper Stick To?

Three surfaces cause almost every failure we see. Heavy texture such as orange peel or knockdown is the first. Paint less than three weeks old is the second. Shower walls that take direct spray are the third. A lining coat solves the first one. Time solves the second. For the third, keep the sheet clear of the spray zone.

Kitchens are fine as long as the wallpaper sits away from the backsplash and the stove. Renters do well here too, since the wallpaper is removable and temporary. It comes off cleanly on moving day.

How Do You Install Self Adhesive Wallpaper?

1. Clean the wall with mild detergent and let it dry fully.
2. Mark a plumb line down from the ceiling as your first edge.
3. Peel back the top few inches of film and line the sheet up.
4. Press down from the top, smoothing outward with a squeegee.
5. Peel the rest of the film as you work down the wall.
6. Trim at the baseboard and ceiling with a sharp blade.

Work in daylight if you can, because raking light shows bubbles that lamps hide. A helper makes the first drop easier, though the rest is a one person job.
